Love at First Sight

I don’t believe in love at first sight—

A statement dear to the naysayer,

Like myself

Whose cynicism and realism

Spare no mercy for the tooth fairy,

Santa Clause, or the Easter bunny.

Believers of such fallacy

Are from an upbringing

Contingent on can-do attitudes

And Thomas the Train re-runs

On grandfathers who tell the story

Of how they met their wives

To doe-eyed grandchildren

Awaiting a fairy-tale in response.

Even the Devil’s Advocate

Would have to agree,

Love at first sight

Is a sadly misguided trope

Created by people

Attracted at first sight,

By the idea of a person

And later fall in love

But tell this story instead
